Detailed description of Rattlewood Golf Course
Rattlewood Golf Course, is a Public, 18 hole golf course located in Mount Airy, Maryland.
Rattlewood golf course first opened for play in 1995. The course was designed by Brian T. Ault.
The Course was acquired by the Montgomery County Revenue Authority, a public corporation,in 1995 from a private developer. The par 72 course is average in length, but somewhat challenging. There is an interesting variety of holes offering tempting risk/reward opportunities. Among golfers, Rattlewood has a reputation for being open during wet conditions because it drains very effectively.
Rattlewood is eight miles north of Damascus on Penn Shop Road off Maryland Route 27.
Blue tees: 6,501 yards, course rating 70.4, slope rating 129.
White tees: 6,104 yards, course rating 69.1, slope rating 125. (men)
White tees: 6,104 yards, course rating 71.9, slope rating 116. (women)
Gold tees: 5,725 yards, course rating 67.4, slope rating 117.
Red tees: 5,092 yards, course rating 68.9, slope rating 110.

Greens are challenging. Fairways are wide. changing fairways to Berumuda grass; 4 finished. Planting two a year. Water holes are not a factor, if drive is over 150 yards.

Very nice course. Excellent mixture of holes. Good conditions. Greens are tough. Very few flat areas and some very difficult pin placements make a premiere short game necessary. Good risk/reward opportunities along the way.

I am not particular about a course, if the greens, tee boxes and fairways are in resonably good shape. This course meets my expectations and as a senior golfer, I get a good price.

I play Rattlewood four or five times a year, most recently 9-17-08.
Layout is good: no two holes look alike, and there is good separation between most fairways. Fairways are generous, and in pretty good shape for this time of year. Greens are medium large, half are gently contoured, and the others have quite a bit of slope: all putt medium fast. Bunkers are plentiful, and are pretty thin: probably the worst feature of the course, at least at the moment. Only three holes have any water in play.
Pro shop is being remodeled, but historically, is smallish, decently stocked, and staff is usually friendly and helpful. Snack bar is adequate for a muni, but staff quality and helpfulness varies greatly.
Pricing is about right for the course, and it is worth a play: it is only about five munites off I-70 in Mt. Airy, so it is easy to find. Call ahead, as they do have a lot of outings and MSGA senior events.
